Irish national hero Dónal Ó Conaill (Daniel O'Connell) ‘The Liberator’ was born here at Carhan House near Cahersiveen on August 6th, 1775 to a wealthy Catholic family. After studies in France he became a barrister in 1794 and was the first Catholic to be elected to the British House of Parliament in 1800. Over 750,000 people turned up to hear him speak at the Hill of Tara in 1843. He became known around the world and played a leading role in the international movement to abolish slavery.
